Philosophy is a subject I dearly love. I've noticed most of the major social sciences such as economics; law and psychology have their fundamentals underpinned by philosophy. This is quite interesting because in order for one to make serious headways in these fields, one has to have his/her philosophical background sound. Here in Africa we have witnessed an 'invasion of foreign ideas which are imposed on us. These ideas are presented as superior to our own ones and over time our own people especially our youths will distaste anything which is associated with our culture and systems. Some call this intellectual imperialism. But the question I have for these people is that is our own beliefs inferior or just that we opt for other peoples' beliefs for strategic reasons. For example we learn the certain subjects in English because many jobs in those fields are available in English speaking countries. Indeed many people actually do so for strategic reasons but at the end of the day, it will appear as if our own systems have become inferior and obsolete at the end of the day in the eyes of certain people who don't see these things in quite an analytical manner.
So for us who are based in Africa, now the time has come for us to look at our beliefs and take a sound analysis so that we can defend them comparatively against foreign ones. This is an approach which I think when implemented will result in the explosion of intellectuals and great ideas from Africa, like what happened in Europe and the USA in the 19th and 20th century. Africa has gone for a very long time on the sidelines and it's time we take great leap forward.
