The above graph is a plot of the exchange rate of the South African Rand and the US dollar. Something about this facinates me. The SA Rand depreciated greatly soon after independence which coincided with increased expenditures on programs for poverty alleviation. This is exactly what happened in Zimbabwe soon after independence (not including the hyper-inflationary period) I am going to further analyze this common occurance to find out any economic relationship between such phenomena.
