The campaign for the US Presidency has been invigorated by the appointment of Paul Ryan as the running mate of the presumtive GOP nominee for the Presidency, Mitt Romney. Up to now, no side seems to have the upper edge but the punches are flying from all angles. The Republicans think they are going to eventually take control of the game but the democrats are countering with a vicious fight.
With Ryan's experience as the chairman of the Congressional Budget Committee, the focus of the debate for now has been on the health of the American economy. What is troubling me is the ill-informed attacks on Obama's handling of the economy by the Republicans. There has been a concerted effort by the Romney team to twist issues for their own benefit, taking advantage of the fact that most ordinary people aren't well-versed with the dynamics of the economy.
On the issue of the US budget deficit, Romney has used a factless approach, unfairly accusing Obama of being the architect of deficit. Most research actually puts blame on the Bush tax cuts which meant that there was going to be a dip in the revenues of the US government. These tax cuts haven't been expansionary because they have been mostly on the wealthy who really don't spend this excess income which doesn't stimulate the economy.
The effect of such moves have worsened social mobility hence the income disparity has continued to increase in America. This disparity isn't being touched much by the Romney guys. Is the US budget deficit unsustainable as is being preached by the Republicans? If you use the tools used by most to measure investor confidence and therefore the appraisal of the US government's ability to pay back it's debt, that is short and medium to long term interest rates, you get a different picture from what the Republicans are saying. These interest rates have been on a record low for a very long time and are expected to remain so.
So the Republicans are just using deficit figures and some spin to mislead the Americans. Their plan on the budget especially Ryan's budget has been accused of not adding up. On top of the Bush tax cuts more are coming but how are they funded? Although the Republicans don't want to admit it explicitly, cuts on social transfers for the poor such as medicare, cheap interest on student loans and unemployment benefits will follow adding to the sufferings of the poor people.
Americans proudly declare their economy of having it's foundations in the free-market doctrine. If it is so, how is it possible for the Obama government to have much influence on jobs? How can he be responsible for delivering jobs? But the Republicans are laying all of the blame on the shoulders of Barack Obama. It's hypocritical.
So this campaign is turning out to be nasty indeed. As a result of the loosening of the campaign finance laws after the internvention of a biased US Sepreme Court, Mitt Romney is raising more money than Barack Obama. But with emergence of the Political Action Committees (PACs) anything can happen. So this battle is going to be fought to the end.
